Families start to visit cemeteries ahead of Undas closures

Families have started to visit local cemeteries ahead of the closures during this year’s Undas to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to Ian Cruz’s “24 Oras” report on Friday.

Authorities said that at least 4,500 people visited the Manila North Cemetery on Friday, with more families anticipated to visit the graves of their departed loved ones.

The visitors were prohibited to bring certain items, including sharp and pointed objects, liquor, gambling items, lighters, and stereos, as well as their pets.

Most of the items confiscated at the entrance were lighters. However, matches will be allowed inside cemetery premises.

The family of Mary Gene Revagorda went to visit the graves of their departed loved ones early to avoid being part of a crowd.

“Supposed to be po November 1 kami pumupunta ngayon nabalitaan po namin maaga sila magsasara ayaw po namin makisabay sa karamihan at saka marami kasing may restriction ngayon kaya mas mabuti na po yung inagahan namin,” Revagorda said.

(We were supposed to visit on November 1. However, we heard that the cemetery would be closed. We don’t want to join the crowd and there are many restrictions now, so it’s better for us to go early.)

The management of the Manila North Cemetery advised visitors not to bring their children, as they were not allowed to enter the cemetery.

Meanwhile, senior citizens are allowed to enter as long as they can walk inside the premises.

The Manila North Cemetery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., however, it will be closed from October 29 to November 2.

The Inter-Agency Task Force passed a resolution ordering the closure of all cemeteries in the country from October 29 to November 2, 2021 to minimize the risk of superspreader events during Undas. — Richa Noriega/DVM, GMA News
