Manila RTC dismisses charge vs. Sulpicio Lines exec over MV Princess of the Stars mishap

The Manila Regional Trial Court has dismissed the charge against Sulpicio Lines Inc. executive Edgar Go in connection with the capsizing of MV Princess of the Stars in 2008, a maritime mishap that killed 800 passengers.

In a 14-page order, Judge Maria Paz Reyes-Yson agreed with Go’s demurrer that that prosecution failed to establish any causal relationship between his being an executive of the company and the acts or omissions that led to the incident.

In his demurrer to evidence, Go argued that the prosecution failed to prove that he, as officer of SLI, had power or authority to perform or fail to perform the charged acts or ommissions.

He added that the prosecution failed to prove that the deaths, physical injuries, and damage to property were related to the commission of the offense alleged.

Go claimed that the prosecutiion failed to prove any causal relation between the accused’s reckless imprudence and the deaths, physical injuries, and property damage caused by the capsizing of the MV Princess of the Stars. -NB, GMA News
