Robredo backs calls to extend voter registration by one month

Vice President Leni Robredo said on Sunday that she supported calls to extend the voter registration period by one more month, reasoning that it was necessary due to the “extraordinary circumstances” of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Senate recently filed a resolution urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to move the voter registration deadline from September 30 to October 31, 2021.

“Sa akin extraordinary kasi ang circumstances. Naiintindihan ang Comelec dahil digitized ang elections, kailangan talagang gumalaw sila, kailangan ayusin nila lahat so kailangan maglagay ng deadline,” Robredo said in her weekly radio program.

(For me, these are extraordinary circumstances. We understand Comelec because it needs to put a deadline as elections will be digitized.)

“Pero baka naman na possible na i-delay pa siya for another month para lang sigurado na makahabol ang hindi pa nakakarehistro,” she further said.

(But it could be possible to delay for another month to ensure that everyone can register.)

She added that she hopes Comelec will heed these calls.

However, Comelec has since voted against the extension.

Instead, the commission approved a resolution that prolonged voter registration hours.  — DVM, GMA News
