Robredo wants to expand bike lanes across the country

Vice President Leni Robredo is planning to put up more bike lanes across the country, saying she will advocate making roads more biker and pedestrian-friendly if she wins the presidency in next year’s national elections.

“Ito ‘yung pinapangarap ko sa buong Pilipinas, lalo na sa Metro Manila, na nakita natin ‘yung need talaga nito [bike lanes] during the pandemic,” the presidential aspirant told reporters in the sidelines of an event in Iloilo City on Saturday.

(This is my dream for the whole Philippines, especially in Metro Manila. We saw the need for these during the pandemic.)

“Sana, sana magawa natin ‘yung nagawa ng Iloilo in many other parts of the Philippines,” Robredo said, referring to the Iloilo River Esplanade.

(I hope we can do what Iloilo did in many other parts of the Philippines.)

The Department of Transportation earlier said it had completed its 500-kilometer bike lane network in metropolitan cities across the Philippines.

The bike lane network includes Metro Manila with 313.12 kilometers, Metro Cebu with 129.47 kilometers, and Metro Davao with 54.74 kilometers.

The Bayanihan 2 provided P1.3 billion worth of funding for active transport, P1.1 billion of which was allocated for the establishment of our bike lanes.

Robredo said she is advocating to make the roads friendly not just for bikers but also for pedestrians “kasi ang dami talagang benefits eh (because it has so many benefits).”

“Nikita natin kanina, parang dito sa Iloilo, naging lifestyle na ng mga tao na either nagba-bike o naglalakad dito sa Esplanade dahil may lugar. So kung, kung ang ibang lugar mayroon ding ganitong nilaan na space para sa kanila, ay, I’m sure mas maraming maeengganyo,” she said.

(We saw here, at the Esplanade, that either biking or walking has become a lifestyle because there is a space for it. So if there are more places such as this, I’m sure many will be encouraged.)
