India celebrates Constitution Day

India has marked its special day for democracy and commitment to the rule of law as it celebrated Constitution Day last November 26.

Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Shambu Kumaran explained India’s history in the adoption of the Republican Constitution in 1949 after its independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.

“It was very clear to us that independent India would mean to have its own constitution, we would have to make a clean break from the old arrangements of colonial domination,” Kumaran said in an interview with Stand for Truth.

According to the report, India’s Constitution was first drafted in 1946 by a  Constituent Assembly.

It said that drafting lasted for three years and the document is considered as one of the longest written constitutions in the world.

India also celebrated its Independence Day last August 15, which marks the end of the rule of the UK in 1947.

“India’s independence of course was the flag bearer for similar movements in many parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America,” Kumaran said.

“The commitment to fundamental rights, the deep commitment to the rule of law, equality of all people, gender, classes, these were very dramatic transformations in the way which India is organized. This is what we celebrate today,” he added.
