97 partylist groups appeal denial of registration before Comelec

At least 97 partylist groups have appealed the denial of their registration for Eleksyon 2022 before the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

This was indicated in the list of registered party-list groups and names of nominees shared by Comelec to the media Monday.

Apart from these, there are five party-list groups whose petitions are pending resolution. These are:

  • Barkadahan Para sa Bansa
  • Malasakit Movement Partylist
  • United Senior Citizens Koalition ng Pilipinas, Inc.
  • Walang Iwanan sa Free Internet (WIFI) Inc.
  • Mothers for Change (MOCHA)

Malasakit Movement Partylist’s first nominee is former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority spokesperson Pircelyn Pialago while MOCHA partylist’s first nominee was former Communications Assistant Secretary Esther Margaux “Mocha” Uson.

So far, 139 partylist groups have been approved to participate in the 2022 elections.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said this figure can still increase.

“Maari pang may madagdag. Ito lang ‘yung accredited na and ready to go pero baka madagdagan pa,” Jimenez said in a media briefing.

(There might be additional groups in the following days. These are just the accredited ones and are considered ready to go.)

Last week, Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon said the poll body has rejected the applications of 126 groups that sought to participate in the party-list elections next year.

As of October 8, there were 270 groups that had filed their certificates of nomination and acceptance.

Voters are only allowed to choose one party-list group during the general elections on May 9, 2022. — BM, GMA News
