Summons issued in Bongbong Marcos COC cancellation case –Comelec

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday said it has issued summons in connection with the moves to cancel former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s candidacy for president in the 2022 elections.

“Summons was issued yesterday, and is expected to be served today,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a message to reporters on Thursday.

“We are awaiting proof of service.”

Jimenez said upon receipt of the summons, Marcos will have five days to file a response.

Human rights organizations last week filed a petition seeking to cancel Marcos’ certificate of candidacy (COC) due to his July 27, 1995 conviction for failing to file income tax returns several times from 1982 to 1985.

Following this, at least 10 more individuals sought the cancellation of Marcos’ COC.

Lawyer Vic Rodriguez, Marcos’ chief of staff and spokesperson, has dismissed the petitions as “political propaganda.”

The Comelec earlier said it is eyeing to resolve all petitions for cancellation of COCs before the scheduled release of official list of 2022 election candidates in December.  —KBK, GMA News
