Commercial license of COVID-19 vaccines may be given by last quarter of 2022 –NTF adviser

Vaccines against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be authorized for commercial use by the last quarter of 2022, an official of the National Task Force against COVID-19 said Thursday.

NTF special adviser Dr. Ted Herbosa answered “yes” when asked if vaccines may be given a commercial license by the last quarter of next year in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

According to Herbosa, vaccines must first complete their phase 3 trials before they can be given a certificate of product registration (CPR).

“So until that study is completed, hindi tatanggapin ng FDA yung CPR nila, ‘yung certificate of product registration. Tapusin ninyo muna ‘yung phase 3 and then pwede na ibenta ‘yan,” he said.

Herbosa said the Pfizer vaccine trial may be the first to be completed in July 2022.

Waning of protection

Herbosa also clarified that though vaccine protection wanes, individuals who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 will still create antibodies against the illness.

According to Herbosa, it only means that the “neutralizing antibody” is decreasing.

“Nabigyan ka ng second dose mataas ‘yung antibody mo. Dahil hindi ka naman na-expose bababa bababa bababa ‘yung antibody mo for several months but that doesn’t mean wala ka nang immunity,” he said.

(Your antibodies are high after being given a second dose. Since you are not exposed to the virus, it will go down for several months, but that doesn’t mean you no longer have immunity.)

“Andyan ‘yung tinatawag na… memory cells na kapag ikaw ay tinamaan ng virus nung SARS-CoV-2, maaalala ‘yun ng immune system mo at magpo-produce na naman siya ng maraming antibody. Hindi na me-measure ‘yun,” he added.

(There’s what we call… memory cells. When you get the SARS-CoV-2 virus, your immune system will remember that and produce numerous antibodies. That can’t be measured.)
