Año says Duterte has yet to pick PNP chief: Pinakamahirap na desisyon

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año on Monday said President Rodrigo Duterte has yet to choose who will be the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

This is despite the fact that PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar is set to retire on November 13.

Año said he will have a meeting with Duterte regarding the matter.

“Ito ang sabi niya na pinakamahirap na pagdedesisyon niya,” the Cabinet secretary told reporters at Villamor Airbase during the ceremonies welcoming the arrival of over 2.8 million doses of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine.

(This is what the President said — this is the hardest decision he has to make.)

“Una, ‘yung lahat ng mga kandidato, kilala niya, nagsilbi rin sa kanya. Pangalawa, ito kasi ‘yung pinakahuli na ia-appoint niya bago ‘yung susunod na election kaya kailangan pag-aralan niyang mabuti,” he said.

(First, he knows all the candidates [for the PNP chief post]. They all served during his term. Second, this is the last appointment he will make before the election so he needs to study the matter carefully.)

Last week, Año said he submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte recommendations to replace the retiring Eleazar.

“I already submitted to the President the list of five names recommended to replace General Eleazar upon his retirement,” Año said in a message to reporters.

No names, however, were disclosed. —Jonathan Andal/KG/RSJ, GMA News
