Maring death toll climbs to 23, 17 other cases being validated

Severe Tropical Storm Maring (international name: Kompasu) was confirmed to have caused 23 deaths with 17 other suspected fatalities being validated, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Sunday.

The latest NDRRMC report indicated that 16 individuals were confirmed missing, while figures for validation include three injured, and two missing.

A total of 11 roads and 13 bridges remained impassable after 25 areas were flooded. Meanwhile, flooding in 153 areas had subsided while floods in 57 other spots were receding.

Nine ports were reported as non-operational or with suspended trips, though six ports in the Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Caraga Regions had restored services.

A total of 7,399 damaged houses were reported in the same regions and adding the damaged homes in Regions 1, 2, 3, 6, and the Cordillera Administrative Region, the total number of homes damaged came to 775,000.

Maring affected a total of 155,156 families in the country, equivalent to 611,705 individuals. It hit some 1,380 barangays and displaced 43,219 individuals.

The Department of Agriculture on Saturday estimated the damage inflicted by Maring at P1.74 billion, after it hit 68,137 hectares of agricultural areas, affecting 56,718 farmers and fishers.

Maring entered the country on October 7 and later intensified into a severe tropical storm with winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 125 kilometers per hour. It left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on October 12. — DVM, GMA News
